Chicha or Peruvian Cumbia

Peru Art Culture and Traditions

A new type of musical genre, chicha, has made major inroads across Latin America. Although it also draws from rock and other modern rhythms, the two musical genres that are the basis of the creation of chicha are the huayno and Colombian cumbia. It has become popular not just all over Peru, but also in neighboring countries like Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Colombia. The main characteristic of this genre is the constant fusion with new rhythms, both modern and traditional, as well as the use of a large number of instruments, particularly electronic ones.
